History of Badminton

Like many popular sports, badminton has a more complex history than one might initially suspect. The history of badminton is interesting to its players and fans alike.
Badminton's origins
Badminton originated in 18th century British India. Originally invented by occupying British officers to pass the time, it has its roots in the traditional English game of battledore and shuttlecock. Unlike battledore and shuttlecock, which uses a wooden paddle, badminton is a racquet game. Badminton also introduced sides and a string over which the ball is hit. Later, this string evolved into a net. The new game increased in popularity in England when returning veterans from India brought it home during the mid-19th century. It took several more decades to catch on in the rest of the world; the International Badminton Federation was established only in 1934. Since that time, the game has become more widespread.
Badminton today
Currently, badminton is played either by opposing singles or doubles. It enjoys Olympic event status and the Olympics includes five badminton events. It is popular both competitively and as simple recreation. Competitive badminton play requires a great deal of physical fitness, and the game can increase stamina, agility and coordination. Because of the wind's effect on the feathered shuttlecock, badminton is usually played indoors. This makes it popular year round, especially in locations that experience either extreme winters or very hot summers.
Badminton evolved from a traditionally English game, battledore and shuttlecock, into one of the world's most beloved racquet sports. Originating in the 18th century, it remains popular in the 21st as well.
